The 10th anniversary of the success of the Silk Road, a set of cartoons to take you to understand the Silk Road

In June 2024, Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Director of UNESCO's World Heritage Centre (WHC), officially issued a document authorizing the International Centre for Conservation of Monuments and Sites (IICC-X) in Xi'an to organize the Silk Roads World Heritage Volunteer Training Camp for the fourth consecutive year.

As 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of the successful inscription of the Silk Road: Chang'an-Tian Shan Corridor on the World Heritage List, the World Heritage Volunteer (WHV) Camp organized by IICC-X also focused on the theme of World Heritage nomination, and through hands-on simulation of the process of World Heritage nomination, it popularized the science and popularization of World Heritage work to the young volunteers. In this lecture, IICC-X invited Mr. Mazher Masanov, member of the World Heritage Committee under the National Committee of the Islamic Educational and Cultural Organization (IECO), UNESCO Almaty Regional Office, to introduce the “Silk Road Central Asia Heritage Corridor” project. “The project. The project is aimed at presenting to the public the numerous Silk Road heritage sites and their unique values along the Central Asian section of the Silk Road through a variety of multimedia means.

“The “Silk Road Central Asia Heritage Corridor” project started in 2018 with the financial support of the European Union's European Year of Culture, in cooperation with the UNESCO Office in Almaty and other relevant organizations in Central Asia, international scholars and artists, and an international online platform for cultural heritage and tourism. Over the years, the project has carried out a series of research, presentation and interpretation projects on the Silk Road World Heritage sites, which have resulted in the production of short documentaries on the sites, VLOGs, cartoons on the sites and the Central Asia section of UNESCO's World Heritage Tours platform. Mr. Mazher Masanov briefly introduced the content of these resources and how to access them, and encouraged people from all walks of life and young scholars who are interested in the Silk Roads, especially in its foreign parts, to go to the relevant resource pages to obtain further resources and information.

In addition to the video lectures, IICC-X staff also translated the cartoons introducing the 11 sites of the Central Asian section of the Silk Road: Road Network of the Chang'an-Tian Shan Corridor, with special thanks to the original cartoonist, Mr. Nicolas Journoud (France), for his wonderful interpretation of the cartoons!
